- Part 2: Common Mac USB SuperDrive Not Working Issues and Solutions. A: Check your iMac version. If the iMac has a built-in optical drive, Apple USB SuperDrive will not work with computer. BTW, only these Mac computers are compatible with external USB SuperDrive: MacBook Pro with Retina display, MacBook Air, iMac (late 2012).
- Steps to Clean the Drive: The first step is to remove the dust and dirt buildup inside of the drive. Open the tray compartment. If the tray is dusty, moisten a soft cloth with a small amount of water, then wring it out so it’s only damp, not dripping. Open the drive and allow the tray to eject. Once open, wipe the tray down with a damp cloth.
Nov 11, 2009 Sometimes the optical drive is still functional but needs a clean up to do efficiently his job. When there's dust (or if you smoke, tabaco fume residue) on the laser lens the laser beam may not correctly read the disk and the result is that the optical drive will spit it out.
AppCleaner is a small application which allows you to thoroughly uninstall unwanted apps. Nov 24, 2017 There’s more to the conversation. I think it said $14.99. My mac mini has been crashing by itself, apps won't open says they quit unexpectedly, sometimes the mac won't restart unless I hold down the button for a while. My net gear WIFI say it quit and I wasn't even using it. All kinds of problems. Mac cleaner wont open. Apr 18, 2018 Nyah. They kinda share a lot in common. If one doesn't work, the other probably won't either. Can you not open the pdf in Mac Preview? If the answer is yes, try the Acrobat Cleaner tool (they now have a Mac version) at Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs to completely remove Reader then try to reinstall. If you can’t open Safari or a new Safari window, try these suggestions. Make sure you’re using the latest versions of Safari and macOS. To check for a Safari or a macOS update, choose Apple menu App Store, then click Updates. See Keep your Mac up to date. Oct 07, 2018 Open up your System Preferences which are usually located in Dock at the bottom part of your screen. One it has opened, click on the Users & Groups option and switch to the Login Items tab. If you see an item named Advanced Mac Cleaner, select it and click on the minus sign to remove it.

Why be careful? If you are considering trying this, your drive already doesn't work. What could you possibly do - make it blow up? Free cache cleaner mac. Sure, maybe you could break it worse, but non-functional is non-functional, so what difference does it make if you do? :-)
You answer your own question: if someone isn't careful while using this cleaning method, they could break something in the optical drive and REALLY make the drive useless. If they're careful, they can sometimes make the drive work again instead of making it unfixable at all (at least not fixable in a practical sense).
Good hint for the savvy owners of out-of-warranty equipment. (That should be plumb, not plum.)
Holy Cow! My drive had not played DVDs for some time now. Compressed air didn't help. Just now it spit out a DVD, did one swipe with an eyeglass cloth, reinserted AND I'M WATCHING A MOVIE!
It is obviously a risky thing to do, but it was worth a try before buying a replacement drive at $100 for a very old laptop (2006 MBP).
Thanks!

I had found this hint elsewhere (can't remember where) quite some time ago and it has served me well. Sadly, my SuperDriver eventually stopped reading disks altogether so I replaced it. But this hint definately made the drive usable for a few years after I first noticed the problem.
The DVD cleaner discs work well with dusty drives too. I have a Macbook pro that was in same situation. I put in the DVD cleaner and it started working again. The DVD cleaner disc actually has little bristles right on the discs surface that brush the lens as it searches the disc. But in a pinch I can see how this might work.
Thank you for the idea. I actually managed to clean my 1.5 year broken SuperDrive in early 2009 MacBookPro with glasses cleaning cloth and a business card ;)
Optical Drive For Macbook
Nice to know, but I prefer to open up the drive and clean it this way. Of course it’s a little bit more work, because you have to open your Mac, but you can directly clean the lens this way without fear of destroying the drive. Here’s a good example: http://muzso.hu/2008/08/17/how-to-clean-the-lens-of-a-slot-loading-optical-drive-a-macbook-pros-superdrive
I did this.. I cleaned the lens using alcohol. Unfortunately it didn't helped at all. DVD's are still working but not CD's.. Those superdrives are really a piece of junk. Mine stopped working after one year.
I did this and everything worked fine afterwards. Before the cleaning it would neither read nor burn CDs and DVDs.
Mac Cleaner Review
Worked first time. Many thanks.
Holy crap it worked. My mini would burn CDs under Lion and Mountain Lion, but then not recognize them. This trick is brilliant.
Open DMG File DMG is used for disk image files on Macintosh computers running Mac OS X. This file extension replaces the older file extension IMG which was discontinued during the release of later series of Mac operating systems. Open DMG File on Mac OS. Since DMG is a native Mac OS disk image format opening DMG file is as easy as double clicking on it in Finder. When you open DMG file this way, disk image stored inside DMG file will be mounted, and then opened in a separate Finder window. If DMG contains installation of an application, then installation window of the app will open. Open .dmg on mac. Click 'Mount' at the top and select the.dmg file you want to open. Once mounted it will appear on your desktop as an icon.
